Samuel Beckett: What is the word

L’obra literària de Samuel Beckett s’emmarca entre els poemes “Whoroscope” i “What is the word”. El treball que he presentat pel projecte “Out of Silence / Reflections on Samuel Beckett's work” de l’artista suec, resident a Alemanya, Wolfgang Peter Menzel, és una creació musical d’aquest darrer poema. “Whoroscope” i “What is the word” expressen allò que, segons crec, és una de les més importants claus conceptuals de Beckett: la contradicció constant entre el pensament filosòfic anglicà ("Esse est percipit") i europeu ("Cogito ergo sum"). Aquesta contradicció s’emmarca, precisament, entre la sàtira a Descartes a "Whoroscope" i el silenci d’un món que no es pot percebre amb les paraules (ni amb la ment) de “What is the word”.

Les paraules ja no expressen res. Heus ací el silenci. I heus ací la desintegració lenta dels personatges de les novel·les de Beckett. De ser trossos de fusta moguts per fils, lluitant inútilment per ser lliures (Murphy, Watt) a ser herois desesperats en un món sense possibilitat de comunicar-se, amb l’únic objectiu de continuar, de viure per a res (Molloy, Malone meurt, L’innommable, Comment c'est).

Beckett entregava el poema “What is the word” a la seva amiga Barbara Bray poc abans de morir. Era la traducció a l’anglès de la versió escrita en francès un any abans, “Coment dire”. La darrera peça d’una obra que havia crescut i madurat durant 60 anys.
